Technology Flashcards
What is technology?
The use of knowledge, skills, values and resources to meet people’s needs and wants.
What is a design brief?
A short statement that describes a need or problem.
What are design specifications?
Details about the product
What are evaluation criteria?
A set of questions about the design process and product.
What are the 5 stages in the design process?
- Investigate
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Communicate
What is a mechanism?
A set of moving parts that are used to make work easier.
What is a lever?
A simple mechanism made of a bar that turns around a fixed point.
What is a fulcrum?
The point of movement or pivot on which the arm of a lever moves.
What is the effort?
A force exerted in a mechanism that enables it to work.
What is a load?
The object or mass that must be lifted cut or moved.
What is mechanical advantage?
When machines or mechanisms enable us to move large loads with a small effort or force.
How do we determine mechanical advantage?
The closer the fulcrum is to the load, the bigger the mechanical advantage is.
What are forces measured in (effort and load)?
Newtons
Where is the fulcrum situated in a first class lever?
In the middle
What is situated in the middle in a second class lever?
load
What is situated in the middle in a third class lever?
effort
What is a linkage?
2 or more levers that are joined
What is a pneumatic system?
A mechanical system that uses compressed air to give us a mechanical advantage.
What is a hydraulic system?
A mechanical system that uses liquids under pressure to to give us a mechanical advantage.
What is a structure?
Something that has been built, made or put together in a particular way to support a load.
What are the purposes of structures?
- To contain something
- To span a distance
- To protect/shelter something
- To support a load
What are the 3 types of structures?
- Shell structure
- Frame structure
- Solid structure
What is triangulation?
arranging members in triangular shapes to to make frame structures stronger.
What is a tie beam?
horizontal beam /crosspiece in a frame structure that supports the other members by holding or pulling the sections together.
What is tension force?
A type of force that strengthens a member.
What is a strut?
a diagonal rod/bar in a frame structure that keeps other members in position by pushing against them.
What is compression force?
A type of force that squashes a member.
What is a member?
The name given to one of the parts that are joined together in a frame structure.
