What is a computer?
Name three basic functions a computer has the ability to do.
It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data.
What are two things all computers have in common?
Two things all computers have in common is hardware and software.
What is hardware?
Hardware is any part of your computer that has physical structure, like the keyboard and mouse.
What is software?
Software is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it like web browsers, games, and processers.
Name at least two diffrent types of computers and describe them.
- Desktop computers, which are desiged to be placed on a desk, and they’re typially made up of a few diffrent parts including the computer case, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
- Laptops are battery-powered computers that are more portable than desktops, allowing you to use them almost anywhere.
Describe at least two diffrences between a PC and a Mac
(include the year each began and operating systems)
- The original IBM PC was introduced in 1981 and it typically includes the Microsoft Windows operating system.
- The Macintosh computer was introduced in 1984, and are made by one company (Apple), and they almost always use the MAC OS X operating system.

What does an operating system manage?
An operating system manages the computer’s memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware.
Name 3 diffrent operating systems.
The three most common operating systems for personal comouters are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What are two alternitives to using a mouse?
Ask Ms. Marsh if you need to describe them or not on the test
- Trackball: A trackball is a ball you can rotate freely, and you can roll it easily with your thumb or finger.
- Touchpad: A touchpad, also known as a trackpad, is a touch-sensetive pad that let’s you do anything with the swipe of your finger.
Name one button and two ports located on the computer case
(front, back, or side)

What do the letters CPU stand for?

What is the function of the CPU?
Sometimes called the brain of the computer, its job is to carry out commands.
What is a motherboard? What is its function?
The motherboard is the computer’s main circuit board. It connrects directly or inderectly to every part of the computer.
A ________converts the power from the wall outlet to the type of power needed by the computer. It sends power through cables to the motherboard and other components.

What is RAM?
Random Access Memory. It holds short-term memory.
What is the purpose of the hardrive?
The hardrive is long-term storage, which means it will save data even once the computer is shut off.
Name three types of expansion cards and the function of each.
- The video card is responsible for what you see.
- The sound card-also called an audio card-is responsible for what you hear.
- And the network card allows your computer to communicate over a network and access the internet.
Why is a heatsink important for a computer?
A heatsink absorbs the heat from the CPU so that it doesn’t overheat.
Name a keyboard shortcut for Windows and one for Mac and tell what it does.
- A shortcut used on Windows is Ctrl+C, which means to copy the text or image selected.
- A shortcut used on Macintosh is Command+C, which also copies the text or image selected.
