Technologies Flashcards
Staining
Improves contrast in samples as the colour often binds differently to distinct parts of the sample
Resolution
Ability to distinguish between two structures that are very close together
Fluorescence Microscopy
type of spectroscopy in which fluorescing substances that exist on the surface will glow after being exposed to a uv light
Confocal technology
Allows us to view living cells in three dimensions. A laser is used to light up sample
GFP Technology
Utilizes a green fluorescent protein found in jellyfish, the protein can be attached to areas or organelles of interest within cells
Electron Microscopy, TEM and SEM
Uses a beam of electrons instead of light to illuminate the specimen
TEM= Depends on beam of electrons passed through a thin section of fixed and strained tissue
SEM= Gives info about surface features of a specimen
X-ray crystallography
Study of the structure of molecules by means of x-rays, special sensors that analyze patterns of x-ray scattering and computer technology (JJ thompson)
