Techniques that are also Exercises Flashcards
1
Q
Effortful Swallow
A
- Swallow an egg/golf ball”
- To reduce valleculae residue
- Increased BOT retraction, tongue propulsion, oral pressure, duration/extent hyoid movement, TVF closure, PES relaxation
- Increase pharyngeal muscle strength
2
Q
Supraglottic Swallow
A
- Take a deep breath, hold breath, swallow, cough, exhale
- Addressed reduced or shortened VF closure
- Prolonged airway closure, increased anterior laryngeal movement, increased tongue base movement, and increased PES opening
- Can use as a compensatory technique
- Can use as exercise: 10x/day; 5 minutes; 5 swallows
3
Q
Super-Supraglottic Swallow
A
- Take a deep breath, BEAR DOWN, hold breath, swallow, cough, exhale
- Prolonged airway closure, increased anterior laryngeal movement, increased tongue base movement, and increased PES opening
- Bearing down increased ventricular fold and assist in closing posterior glottis
- Penetration/aspiration
4
Q
Breath Hold and Effortful Breath Hold
A
5
Q
Mendelsohn Maneuver
A
- Addresses reduced laryngeal movement and poor coordination
- Extends the duration of laryngeal excursion and UES opening
- EXERCISE ONLY!- no longer recommended as a compensatory technique
- sEMG can validate if done correctly
- prolong the swallow, mid-swallow, pressing tongue up against the hard palate, to extend laryngeal closure
