Techniques 2 Flashcards
Define Pertissage
a movement applied with one or both hands, alternate pressure and release of soft tissue. Pressure is applied by lifting up soft tissue from underlying structures or compressing down toward underlying structures
What are the indications for petrissage?
inefficient circulation edema muscle hypertonus/contractions digestive disorders decreased active ROM
What are the effects of petrissage?
increase circulation decreases hypertonus muscles stretches muscle and surrounding tissue can be stimulatory can be sedative increases blood flow stretches tights and hypertoned muscles
What are the petrissage techniques?
skin rolling, wrininging, picking up, and kneading (+ open C)
What is skin rolling?
a movement where cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue is grasped and lifted away from underyling structure and is then rolled between the fingers and thumb
What are the indications of skin rolling
inefficient cutaneous circulation
superficial adhesions and scars
What are the effects of skin rolling?
loosens superficial adhered tissues
stretches fascia
causes an increase in local skin circulation
What are the uses of skin rolling?
scar tissue, overuse, misuse, prolonged absence of use of muscle or muscele group
increased mobility, ROM, and fluidity of movement
What are the precautions/CI of skin rolling?
hypersensitive
histamine reaction
over boney prominences
Do you use oil with skin rolling?
no
Define wringing
a petrissage technique applied with equal pressure on opposite sides of the part of the body being treated. Underlying tissue is compressed in opposing directions moving the tissue towards midline then away. Tissue is lifted and then released
What are the indications of wringing
poor circulation
edema
hypertoned muscles
transition
What is the definition of picking up
a technique specifically for muscle groups of the limb. Soft tissues are simultaneously compressed together and lifted up from underlying structures. The motion is circular and supports venous return
What are the indications for picking up
inefficient circulation
edema
hypertoned muscles
transition
What is the definition of kneading?
a compressive petrissage movement. Applied in rhythmical circular motion with alternating pressure and release. The hands always keep contact
What are the types of kneading?
palmar, fingertip, thumb, knuckle
What are the indications of kneading?
inefficient circulation edema hypertonus muscle digestive disorders deacreased active ROM atonic constipation
What are the effects of kneading?
increased circulation decreases muscle hypertonus stretches mucles and surrounding tissue increased mobility and flexibility stimulatory sedative stimulaties peristalsis when applied to colon
What is the definition of open c kneading
a variation of kneading when the hands are held in a c shape the tissues are alternately compressed and released
What are the indications for open c kneadingW
inefficient circulation
edema
muscle hypertonus
What are the effects of open c kneading
increase cirulation decrases muscle hypertonus stretches muscle and surrounding tissue increase mobility sedative stimulatroy
What is the definition of tapotment?
a series of alternating, rapid, rhythmic percussive strikes to the surface of the body
What are the different types of tapotment
pincement, fingertip tapping, fingertip percussion, cupping, clapping, ulnar hacking, loose digital hacking, pounding, beating/knuckle percussion
