Unity & Purpose

Adjustment

Correlational Research Design
investigates relationships between variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them; the correlation reflects the strength and/or direction of the relationship between 2+ variables.
Behavioral Genetics
study of the relationship between genetic variation and psychological traits.
Longitudinal Consistency
to be present for a prolonged amount of time.
Role
a coherent sent of behaviors expected of an individual in a specific position within a group or social setting.
Adaptation
the ability to adjust to new information and experiences.
Guided Autobiography
method of helping people capture and share meaningful moments and life stories.
Narrative
“storied nature of human conduct.”
Synchronic Integration vs. Diachronic Integration
synchronic attempts to make sense of our various, different, and sometimes conflicting roles; diachronic focuses on long-term advantages.
Heritability
a measure of how well differences in people’s genes account for differences in their traits.
Developmental Stages
a period in development during which specific abilities, characteristics, or behavior patterns appear; infancy, toddler, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood, and elder.
Culture
the values, beliefs, language, rituals, traditions, and other behaviors that are passed from one generation to another within any social group.
Factor Analysis
statistical method used to evaluate relationships among a set of observed variables.
DSM
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; handbook used by health care professionals in the U.S. as an authoritative guide of diagnosis for mental disorders.
Environment
the external agents or conditions that influence the functions of an organism.
Situation
one or more circumstances, conditions, states, or entities in the environment that have the potential to exert causal influences on an individual’s behavior.
Psychobiography
a form of biographical literature that offers a psychological profile or analysis of an individual’s personality in addition to the usual account of their life and experiences.
Twin Studies
research utilizing twins; purpose is usually to assess the relative contributions of heredity and environment to some attribute.
Design-Based Research
methodology used by researchers in learning sciences.
