Q

What are the 2 major functions of the Splicer/Inserter?

A

The first function is to join inputs from multiple services into two outputs (just like a mux). The two outputs are ASI and these outputs feed the inputs of decoders. An SD splicer has 16 services, 8 per output and an HD splicer has 8 services, 4 per output. The second function of a splicer is to insert commercials when cue triggers are received. During programming the splicer will remain in the ‘primary’ position but during commercial breaks the splicer will change to the ‘secondary’ position allowing commercials to insert in place of the network signal.

9
Q

What is the definition for Statistical Multiplexing?

A

Channels “lend” bandwidth to more complex programming, the main advantage is that more channels can be added to a given encoder group without adversely affecting the service(s) and channels can share bandwidth in a single pool.

Q

Why is the NEO still necessary if all signals are supposed to be digital?

A

Because some signals that are received from overseas providers and local television station affiliates are received in analog format.

11
Q

Why is compressed video more economical than uncompressed video?

A

Compressed video uses less bandwidth which increases the amount of services that can be transmitted through the satellite transponder.

25
Q

(True or False) When trying to reach a service provider, a technician should call ALL the numbers listed in ELVIS
for that provider.

A

True

26
Q

When should a technician escalate a service provider call to a Team Leader or Supervisor?

A

If the service provider does not understand what the caller is asking for,
if the service provider refuses to give the caller any information regarding the outage and/or
if the caller has eliminated any chance of the outage being Dish Technologies equipment related and the service provider still says their equipment is fine.

27
Q

What is the best definition of aspect ratio?

A

An image that describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height.

28
Q

(True or False) Technicians should work to restore the signal first, if possible and then work on finding the root cause for an outage.

A

True

29
Q

After an outage is determined to be a provider issue and the reason for the outage (RFO), what additional information should be asked from the service provider?

A

Estimated Time of Restoral (ETR)

30
Q

(True or False) Technicians are not required to call a service provider once an hour until they are reached during update periods.

A

False

31
Q

When is a technician not required to call the service provider for the hourly update?

A

When a service provider requests that we not call again until a specified time, when it is determined the outage is not an Dish Technologies equipment-related issue and/or
when a service provider gives an estimated time of restoral.

32
Q

What should a technician be aware of and keep in mind when speaking on the phone?

A

False

37
Q

During a ‘formal’ shadow with a Compression Engineer, he stated that the Multiplexer (MUX) is a ‘smart’ piece of equipment. The engineer explained that during programming which has a lot of movement, such as a football or basketball game, the MUX was needed to ‘steal’ bandwidth from any service that does not have a lot of moving video, such as a news program, to ensure the program with the high movement continues to play out to DISH customers with no interference such as video pixilating, blocking, etc. Which Mux process was the engineer describing?

A

Statistical Multiplexing

41
Q

During an outage scenario, when would a technician not be required to call a provider representative for an hourly update?

A
