Tech2 Flashcards
What is the standard format for television transmission signals referred to as in the United States?
NTSC (National Television Systems Committee)
What department has the responsibility of converting a PAL signal to an NTSC signal?
Baseband Engineering (BE)
What piece of equipment is used to strip away a carrier wave (the encoding of the signal)?
Decoder
What are the 2 major functions of the Splicer/Inserter?
The first function is to join inputs from multiple services into two outputs (just like a mux). The two outputs are ASI and these outputs feed the inputs of decoders. An SD splicer has 16 services, 8 per output and an HD splicer has 8 services, 4 per output. The second function of a splicer is to insert commercials when cue triggers are received. During programming the splicer will remain in the ‘primary’ position but during commercial breaks the splicer will change to the ‘secondary’ position allowing commercials to insert in place of the network signal.
What piece of equipment converts a Phase Alternating Line (PAL) signal into a National Television System Committee (NTSC) digital signal?
Standards Converter
Which piece of equipment takes an analog signal and converts it into a digital signal and which department is responsible for its maintenance?
NEO; Baseband Engineering (BE)
What are the models (names) of the Multiplexer (Mux) used by the Compression Department?
Prostream and the X2
This piece of equipment allows Conditional Access System (CAS) data to be injected into the signal path and which department is responsible for it?
Prostar Mux and Compression
What is the definition for Statistical Multiplexing?
Channels “lend” bandwidth to more complex programming, the main advantage is that more channels can be added to a given encoder group without adversely affecting the service(s) and channels can share bandwidth in a single pool.
Why is the NEO still necessary if all signals are supposed to be digital?
Because some signals that are received from overseas providers and local television station affiliates are received in analog format.
Why is compressed video more economical than uncompressed video?
Compressed video uses less bandwidth which increases the amount of services that can be transmitted through the satellite transponder.
What piece of equipment can adjust the amount of bandwidth used to transmit audio and/or video signals to DISH Network customers?
Encoder
What is the device that “receives” amplifies and retransmits a signal on a different frequency than it was originally broadcast?
Transponder
Which Mux process involves lending bandwidth?
Statistical Multiplexing
Who selects the movies and versions of the movies to be aired as PPV?
DISH Corporate Programming
For PPV automation, media is ingested into the MC server platform via what system?
The Automation System
Which department is responsible for maintaining the audio and video infrastructure and maintenance of the monitoring and alarm system used by the MC?
Baseband Engineering (BE)
Once a PPV movie media is created, it is ingested into the automation equipment, what server platform is used to transmit programming to DISH Network customers?
Omneon Server Platform
What is the type of Master Control programming which involves movies?
Pay-Per-View (PPV)
What is the type of Master Control programming which involves football, basketball, and baseball games?
Sporting/Sports (SPT)
What is the type of Master Control programming which involves shopping channels?
Business Television (BTV)
What is the type of Master Control programming which involves internal closed circuit channels?
Special DISH programming such as All-Team meetings, etc.
