Summerizing
defined as the main indea of the passage. Though summary does have to explain main idea
Topic/Main idea
One of the most imporant skills in reading comprehensive
Topic
Known to be the subject or what text is about.
Usually expressed in a few words
Main Idea
-Most important point being made by the author.
-Need full sentences
What is the paragraph first sentence known to be?
Often but “Not Always” the main topic sentences and it gives the read a summary of the content of the paragraph
Suporting details
-Knowns as key points.
-Provide evidence and back for main point
-All text contain details but they are classified as Supporting details
-Found in Informative and Persuasive text
Main Point
Important to consider whether the author supporting details really back up main point
Topic and Summary
-Convient to encapsulae the main idea
-In some textbook and academic articles, author will place topic or summary sentence at the beginning of each sentence to prepare what is coming
Paraphrasing
-Strategy that can be used to both increase reader comprehension and include information of the writing.
-Putting into your own words
-Provide background a writer gained from the research before moving into body and essay
-Completed during post reading
Making Inferences
Piece of imformation that is implied but not written outright by the author.
Avoid using information BEYOND THE PROVIDED PASSAGE before maing inferences
LOOK FOR CONTEXT CLUES
Context Clues
WIll help you find the best answer
Drawing Conclusion
Logical conclusion - determine whether you agree with the author or not
Combine information that you have read and make a a logical conclusion
Implied
-Written information and other times the information is stated directly
-One should always aim to draw conclusion from information stated within passage
Implication
Things the the author DOES NOT state directly but reader can assume what author is trying to say
Explicit
expressed what is meant from author perspective and interpretation
