Qualities of a good leader
Good communication skills - listen

When are doctors leaders
MDT - course of treatment
COVID - government
COVID immunisation
PCN - how to deliver COVID vaccines
Leading in changes in providing care to patients with COVID
Doctors in teamwork
Learning disabilities - predominant care is under social care but the social carer can still ask the doctor for input
Ward round - when discussing discharge, doctor may have input on medical side, but social care will take the lead
Team with the patient
What position do I like to play in a team
Both
Yet prefer a leader
Channel relay team
Charity 24 hour swim
Water polo tournament
Volunteering
When worked in a team and failed
Swimming at BUCS
HCA - aggressive patient
Advantages of team
Empathise and support each other - death
New ideas to improve patient care - hoist
Work to strengths for best patient care - MDT - aggressive patient
Disadvantages of team
Conflict between coworkers e.g. with my swimmers
Some may not pull weight- channel swim
Strong personalities - not willing to compromise, hard to change some peoples lives - e.g. paperwork
Don’t listen
Not self-aware and won’t ask for help if struggling
Examples of me as a leader
Channel relay team
Charity 24 hour swim
Water polo tournament
Volunteering
Do you work better as a team or by yourself
• Both – I think it depends on the task
HCA – work better as part of the team – gain new ideas
Yet, charity work - loved being a leader and part of team
Swimming/uni work – self yet groups with anatomy
Why is teamwork important in medicine
• Increases speed of care
o E.g. when my patient fell over, able to get off the floor quicker
• Patient involved in teamwork
o Feel more involved, more empowered, more likely to take advice
• Support each other through the tough times
o E.g. death
o E.g. when struggling to dress patient
• New ideas to improve patient care
o E.g. teddy bear – hoist
o E.g. babies
o E.g volunteering – different way of explaining something
How do you resolve conflict in a group
Confidential, act locally, understand from both sides – empathy, calm, take further if needed but let the person know if I do
• E.g. charity/inclusion – pushy captain
o Confidential
o Locally
o Impartial and non-judgmental
o Meetings so both sides could explain their opinions
o Take issue further if needed
o Signpost for support
• E.g. volunteering o Girls didn’t like being together o Separate lanes o Encouraged them to learn differences o Parents involved too o Relays, Christmas parties etc.
• E.g. aggressive patient – grab arm and try to hit other residents
o Empathy – their feelings are real to them
o Respect personal space – 1m away, decreases anxiety
o Non-threatening/non-verbal communication – give eye contact but remain calm
o Seperated residents involved
o Called nurse to ask for help – administered medicine
o Filled out distressed chart
o Learn to distract/change topic with her - mits with buttons, give babies
o Learnt: importance of adapting communication skills to remain calm in these stressful situations e.g. distract, empathy, teamwork – nurse
What do if see team member not contributing much
- Ask them if there is specific reason – may be having troubles
- Ask if anything you can do to help
- Privately, calmly and politely explain
- If does not resolve, then go to tutor
- E.g. channel swim – understand purpose and importance
Why does a team leader need to allocate
• Make the most out of everyones individual skillset
• More time efficient
• More rewarding – everyones involved
• E.g. charity – channel swim – have to allocate according to peoples strengths
• E.g. MDT – need to utilise everyones strengths, more time efficient, better patient care
o Aggressive patient – we all knew what to do in that situation
What do if see £20 missing
- Perhaps money was lost and shouldn’t be quick to blame
- There may be a simple explanation
- Approach the group – ask anyone who may know what has happened to it to come to you privately
- If know which member, take away from group setting – ask why? May be a reason behind it
- Explain negative consequences
- Better to admit
- Tell charity will try to fundraise to make up for it
One time lifted morale in group
• E.g. HCA
o Spa night at the special needs home
o Face masks – yoghurt
o Painted their nails
• E.g. volunteering
o Helped organised Christmas party
o Helps social skills
• E.g. charity
What is your leadership style
- E.g. charity
- Make sure everyone understands what I’ve said and feels listened to
- Repeat myself if need to
- Boundaries
- Lots of positive encouragement
- Non-judgmental
- Approachable
- Inclusive
What difficulties do you have working with people with different interests/backgrounds?
- “I have no difficulties at all, I understand we all have different qualities and skills to offer and I enjoy learning about different cultures”
- E.g. volunteering
- E.g. HCA
- Learnt to adapt communication, empathetic, teamwork
Examples of good leadership you observed
HCA - they were empathetic as they had also been a HCA, supportive of personal development, good communication - listen in team meetings - ask if we have any concerns, approachable
