What do trade unions do?
They act as a pressure group- influences government
Protecting its members E.g Working conditions Hours Redundancy Pay Discrimination Safety at work Holiday entitlement
Benefits of union memberships
They have strength in numbers- this means more influence on employers than individuals
Give expert advice and support- they employ solicitors.. This means that they give advice about rights
They have the money to help pay for expensive court cases
Trained negotiators
What are the main forms of industrial action
Strike- workers not working (all production may have to stop)
Overtime ban (workers only work hours in their contract)
Work to rule (workers only do what’s in their job description)
Disadvantage of trade union
Employee must pay to be part of union
No guarantee of outcome
