Criterion-referenced standard setting
Pass mark is based on predefined reference points or criteria
Norm-referenced standard setting
Assessors set a pass mark based on the performance of learners who have taken the same assessment previously
Designed to compare and rank test takers in relation to one another.
Transformative learning
Moment when the trainee has ‘seen the light’ and understood the length, breadth and depth of the concepts behind the subjects and has, in some way, been transformed into a different adult learner
Validity
Validity is, more or less, defined by the syllabus or curriculum, current standards of practice
Summative assessment
measure the outcome of an educational outcome
Equating
adjustment of test scores so that the populations of two or more forms of a test are comparable.
Appraisal
Performance review and may utilise several tools to provide evidence of past achievement
Snowballing
Discussion may be very basic and unstructured at first but then becomes more intense

Hierarchy is involved which develops over several encounters and over a significant time span
Schema refinement
learners are encouraged to apply basic concepts, clarify their understanding and solve clinical problems
