Teacher's notes (Earthquakes and Tsunamis) Flashcards
What is Attenuation?
Weakening or removal of high-frequency seismic waves
What is the Epicentre?
Point on Earth’s surface directly anove the focus
What is a Fault?
A fraction or zone of between 2 blocks of rocks; allows blocks to move relative to each other
what is the focus?
Point of energy release; radiates out in all directions
What is Intensity?
Qualitative way to describe/compare earthquakes
Explain Liquefaction
Loosely packed, water-logged sediments at or near the ground surface lose their strength in response to strong ground shaking
What is Magnitude
Objective measurement of the energy radiated by an earthquake; Richter magnitude vs moment magnitude
What is Material Amplification
What is Megathrust Earthquake (subduction zone earthquake)
explain a P-wave
Explain an S-wave
Explain Surface Waves
What is a Tsunami
wave or series of waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of water
