Sen no Rikyu

Sen no Rikyu:
- Perfected the procedure of making tea.
▪ the order of movements
▪ the size of tearoom or tea utensils.
- Emphasized the spiritual aspects of tea
- Integrated Zen and tea as a unified whole

Rikyu sought ways to obtain peace of mind
through tea practices, like Zen meditation.

Tea is enough if it satisfies thirst:
* Thirst applies to our mental state.
* The way of tea brings a spiritual
state of selflessness and
peacefulness→a state of
enlightenment

Philosophy of Sado (Wa, Kei, Sei, Jaku)

“Sa” & “Cha” = “tea”
“Do” = “way”

  • Began as a simple act of making and drinking tea.
    →became a highly stylized form of art being
    influenced by Zen Buddhism philosophy

**和(Wa) **means to create a friendly relationship (harmony) between the host and guest. Also means being friendly to nature, based on the ideology of human as a part of nature.

敬(Kei) means to show one’s respect to others and nature and to be humble at all times. Doing so negates one’s selfishness and, thus, enables one to attain peace of mind.

**清(Sei) **means to obtain cleanliness both outside and inside. One should wash one’s hands and mouth before entering the tearoom—to attain physical purity—and also empty one’s mind through the act of
making and drinking tea—to attain spiritual purity.

寂(Jaku) means to attain calmness in mind (tranquillity) so that one is prepared to face anything at all times. This can be achieved through physical training –practice - of tea.

2 Styles of Tea Gatherings

A

**1. Chaji **(formal tea gathering)
* 1-4 guests
* May take up to four hours

Progression
* The host serves kaiseki meal and sake.
* Guests rest in the waiting alcove in the garden. The host replaces the scroll
with flowers.
* The guests share a bowl of thick tea by passing it hand to hand.
* The host serves sweets and then thin tea to each guest

2. Chakai (informal tea gathering)
* larger number of guests
* 30 min. to one hour

*Progression *
* The guests enter the tearoom.
* The host starts preparing tea.
* The guests will eat sweets.
* The host serves thin tea to the guests.
* The other guests will be served thin tea.

**When you Drink Tea as a Guest **

A

Guest: Bow to the host→ Pick & place the sweet on your kaishi paper
→ Eat it (or pretend to)

Bow to your host.
Take the chawan with your right hand and place it on your left hand.
Turn the chawan in your palm twice clockwise, avoiding drinking from the front of the chawan. Drink with 2 ½-3 ½ sips.
Wipe the lip mark on the chawan with your fingers and then wipe your fingers with a kaishi.
**⑤ **Turn the bowl counterclockwise twice and put the chawan on the table. Bow to the host.
