Tcp/ip Protocols- communications Flashcards
What is a protocol
A set of rules and instructions computers follow in order to communicate
What is Tcp/ip protocol stack
Application Transport Network Data link Physical
How/what does application link to
Application
No switch and router
How/what does transport link to
Transport
No switch and router
What does data link to
Data
Through 2 switches and routers
How/what does physical link to
Physical
Through 2 switches and router
What does tcp mean
Transmission control protocol interconnects computers over the internet. Tcp protocol functions by separating its different jobs into layers. These layers are: application, transport, network, data and physical
What is the role of the application layer
Q
What is the role of the physical layer
G
What is the role of the data link layer
S
Advantages and disadvantages of using a computer network over a stand alone computer
You can install that software on all the computers at once
Easily share resources.
Harder to mange to whole system ( complicated)
Quite expensive to install a whole system
Advantages and disadvantages of bus topolgy
Requires less cable
Cheaper
Works well when you have a small network
Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
Difficult to identify problems when the whole network shuts down
Advantages and disadvantages of the ring topology
Dis- all data being transferred over the network must pass through each workstation. The whole network will be impacted if one workstation shuts down.
Adv- all data flows in one direction reducing the chances of collisions
A network server is not needed
Advantages and disadvantages of the star topology
Requires more cable. If the hub or switch fails the nodes attached are disabled.
A particular problem with one node doesn’t affect the others
It is easy to install and maintain
What is a node
A device or data point in a larger network
