Behavior support techniques are one of the many de- escalation techniques that help a child reduce stress and risk and help the child to self regulate. Each technique is designed to support the child’s needs and meaning of the child’s behavior.
Mismatched behavior support techniques to the patient’s needs can escalate the situation.
Name 5 examples of behavior support technique
1.) Managing the environment- less demanding activity when a patient is stressed, dimming lights, lowering volume of sounds.
2.) Prompting- i.e. verbal -remember to take a deep breath when you see ( triggering person). Non verbal- a glance or nod can remind a patient of an expectation.
3.) Redirection- turning a patient away from a stressful activity to one that is calming/neutral.
4.) Directive Statements- a request or clear expectation. Guidelines: Child trusts staff, child has the ability, and the expectation is important enough to risk escalation.
5.) Caring gestures - I care about you and want you to be successful.
