TCAP review vocab Flashcards
Active Transport
The movement of substances across the cell membrane that requires the cell to use energy
Cell Membrane
a phospholipid layer that covers a cells surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cells enviroment
Cellular Respiration
the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Cell Wall
a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane in plants , fungi, and some bacteria, and provides support to the cell
Chloroplast
an organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
Cytokinesis
the division of the cytoplasm of a cell
Cytoplasm
the region of the cell within the membrane that includes the fluid, the cytoskeleton, and all of the organelles except the nucleus
Daughter Cells
either of the two cells formed when a cell undergoes cell division by mitosis; they are genetically identical to the parent cell
Diffusion
the movement of particles from regions of higher concentrations to regions of lower concentrations
Homeostasis
the maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment
Interphase
the period of the cell cycle during which activities such as cell growth and DNA replication occur without visible signs of cell division
Meiosis
a process in cell division during which the number of chromosomes decreases to half the original number by two divisions of the nucleus, which results in the production of sex cells
Mitochondria
in eukaryotic cells, the organelle that is the site of cellular respiration, which releases energy for use by the cell
Mitosis
in eukaryotic cells, a process of cell division that forms two new nuclei, each of which has the same number of chromosomes
Nucleus
in physical science, an atom’s central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons ; in a eukaryotic cell, a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA
