SSH
Meaning: Secure Shell
Port: TCP 22
Facts: Same as telnet but for remote access and is encrypted.
Telnet
Meaning: Telecommunications Network
Port: TCP 22
Facts: Used for remote access to login devices. In-the-clear communications and not encrypted.
DHCP
Meaning: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
Port: UDP 67, 68
Facts: Automates configuration of IP addresses, subnet masks, etc.
SNMP
Meaning: Simple Network Management Protocol
Port: UDP 161
Facts: Gathers statistics from network devices. Version 1 and 2 are not encrypted but Version 3 is.
SMTP
Meaning: Simple mail transfer protocol
Port: TCP 25
Facts: Server to server mail transfer. Also used to connect devices to mail server. Ex. Phones.
DNS
Meaning: Domain Name System
Port: UDP 53
Facts: Converts names to IP addresses
FTP
Meaning: File Transfer Protocol
Port: TCP 20 for active data transfer and TCP 21 as the control
Facts: Transfer files needing authentication (username and password).
SMB
Meaning: Sever Management Block
Port: TCP 445
Facts: Windows product. File sharing and printer sharing. AKA CIFS (Common Internet File System)
SFTP
Meaning: Secure File Transfer Protocol
Port: TCP 22 (Same as SSH)
Facts: Same port as SSH because it uses SSH. Is encrypted and provides system functionality.
POP3
Meaning: Post Office Protocol v.3
Port: TCP 110
Facts: Basic mail transfer functions.
HTTP
Meaning: Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Port: TCP 80
Facts: Communicate with a browser without encryption.
HTTPS
Meaning: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure
Port: TCP 443
Facts: Communicate with a browser with encryption.
TFTP
Meaning: Trivial File Transfer Protocol
Port: UDP 69
Facts: Simple Communication method. No authentication or encryption.
NTP
Meaning: Network Time Protocol
Port: UDP
Facts: Gives things a very accurate clock so devices are on the same page with regards to the time.
LDAP
Meaning: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
Port: TCP 389
Facts: Store and retrieve data from Active Directory and is non standard.
