TBL 2 - Dyspepsia Flashcards
What is a cross-over study?
Clinical trial in which the study participants receive all treatments in random order. Essentially this groups in the study switch off as the control group.
Helpful when participants may not be willing to be part of a study unless they are promised a new treatment. (otherwise could be not as great for people assigned to the placebo group)
How does pasireotide work?
It is a somatostatin analog - higher affinity for 4/5 somatostatin receptors
What we should know:
- Decreases Secretions
- Decreases Motility
Describe in very basic terms, early dumping syndrome and late dumping syndrome:
Early:
- Hyperosmolarity in the duodenum causes a rapid shift of fluid from plasma into the bowel
- This shift causes colicky abdominal pain, diarrhea, and hypotension (with reflex tachycardia)
Late:
- The large amount of Glucose is absorbed quickly
- Tons of insulin is then inappropriately released
- Causes hypoglycemia 1-3 hrs post-prandial
- Dizziness, fatigue, diaphoresis
Interpret a forest plot
Ya, you should just know how to do that for the test. Sorry this is a dumb flashcard…
