TBI TERMS Flashcards
Decerebrate
extensor posture of limbs/or trunk
Decorticate
flexion of the upper but extension of lower limbs
Deep venous thrombosis (DVT)
a thrombosis, commonly seen in the legs or pelvis that results from phlebitis (vein injury) or prolonged bed rest
Hydrocephalus
abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain
Ataxia
Inability to coordinate muscle activity during voluntary movement. In posterior column damage of the spinal cord, incoordination and loss of proprioception is caused by misjudgment of limb position with balance problems. Cerebellar ataxia produces a reeling wide-based gait.
Apraxia
motor planning* Loss of skilled purposeful movement that cannot be attributed either to deficits in primary motor skills or problems in comprehension. It can affect ideation and concept formation as well as programming and planning of movement. Ex: patient is unable to relate the articles of clothes to the body
Hypertonicity
- involuntary non-velocity dependent resistance to movement
Spasticity
increased voluntary resistance to PROM and voluntary movement, velocity dependent
Dysautonomia
abnormality in function of automatic nervous system
Retrograde amnesia
memory loss of events prior to accident
Anterograde amnesia
inability to learn new information
Coup-contrecoup
situation in which direct brain damage is incurred in traumatic event as the cerebrum rotates on the more stable brainstem while accelerating from the force of impact. The cerebrum strikes the skull (coup), and then accelerates in the opposite direction (causing shearing and stretching of neurons) Acceleration and deceleration
Perseveration
maintain status and prevent secondary damage
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
Progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes with a history of repetitive brain trauma → triggers progressive degeneration of brain tissue and build up of abnormal protein caused tau.
Hypoxia
pathological condition that results in insufficient oxygenation of the blood
