Tay Science 2 Flashcards
Test
Atomic Mass
The mass of an average atom of an element
Alkali Metal - example
Group 1- Metallic elements are all strongly reactive, soft low density. Examples are lithium, sodium and potassium
Periodic Table - how arranged
organized list in which elements are arranged in rows and columns according to their atomic number and pattern of similar properties
Electron Shell
Regions surrounding the nucleus of an atom in which electrons move
period
Horizontal row in the periodic table
Valence Shell
The outermost electron shell
Element (what is it?)
A pure substance that cannot be broken down or seperated into a simpler substance - the periodic table of elements
Atomic Number
The number of protons in each atom of an element
Mass Number
The number of protons and neutrons
Halogens (examples)
Group 17 non-metalic elements - examples are fluorine, chlorine, iodine, bromine astatine
Non Metals
Elements that typically not shiny and malleable or are poor conductors of heat and electricity usually gases or brittle solids at room temp- Argon Radon Carbon and Neon
Properties - Metals
Typically hard and shiny malleable ductile and good conductors of heat and electricity
Ion- charge
electrical charge that forms on an atom when it gains or loses energy
Metalloids -examples
Elements that share some properties with the metals and some properties with non-metals - example is boron silicon polonium
Noble Gases
Group 18 elements - example helium neon argon krypton radon
