Taxpayers Flashcards
Bowstring truss roof support
Can only support 40% of the load they were originally designed to hold
When can failure occur in bowstring truss roofs
Failure can occur in the early stages of fire
Failure of one element can cause a failure of the entire truss
What class construction is a Taxpayer
Class 3 construction with the most common size being 100 x 100
When can open web steel joists collapse
Used to span long distances up to 60 ft they are vulnerable to elevated temps and may collapse after only 5 or 10 mins
Steel beam temps
Steel I beams 50 ft long heated uniformly to 970 F will extend in length approximately 4 inches
At 1000 F a 100 ft long beam will have extended 9 1/2” inches
Fire Temps can be reached in 5-10 mins and about 30 mins the steel will reach those temps
Cooling beams with hoseline WILL cause it to regain it strength and load carrying ability
Cockloft height in Taxpayer
Can be from 4 inches to more than 6ft
Cellar entrances
Front - usually Bilco doors in sidewalk with stairs
Rear- usually has stairs
Cellar contains electrical and gas supply meters and piping
Securing overhead doors
Use vice grips in track under roller or ladder as a stop
Major firefighting factor in new and old types
Roof system because they are constructed of bar joists, light weight steel or flat wood trusses
Warning signs of collapse
Heavy body of fire burning out of control for 20 mins or more
Walls leaking smoke or water
Walls or columns out of plumb
Unsupported walls
Inability to make successful headway against a heavy fire condition within 20 mins into the operation
Spongy or soft feeling as you walk on the roof
When do backdrafts occur
Introduction of oxygen to compartment that has been pressurized by the smoke and fire gases of an oxygen deficient fire in the decay stage
Smoke explosions occur when fuel rich smoke mixes with additional air and falls within its flammable explosive range
When do you transmit a second alarm in a taxpayer
Extension to cockloft
Extension to adjoining occupancy
Advanced fire in the cellar
How many portable ladders should be positioned at a taxpayer
All sides of the building should be covered and a MINIMUM of 2 shall be placed in the front of the building. (1 for each side and 2 minimum in front)
What size hoseline should be used at Taxpayer fires
They will require the use of 2 1/2” hoselines due to Large Uncompartmented areas
When will the second due engine stretch and operate a second line
Code: WELSH
WATER SOURCE- 1st due has secured a positive water source. 2nd Engine Officer confirms with 1st due ECC
Extension - second line needed to address Fire extension
Life hazard- second line needed to address life hazard
Sufficiently short- hose stretches are sufficiently short and 1st due will not require immediate assistance
Help- 1st due does not require help of 2nd due to get line in OPERATION. 2nd due Officer must confirm with 1st due
