Taxonomy Flashcards
What did Carolus Linneaus develop?
He developed a system of binomial nomenclature.
Taxonomy
defined as the study of principles, procedures, rules of scientific classification and the naming of organisms
Linnean system of Nomeclature:
application of distinctive names to each groups of organisms
Classification:
defined as ordering of living organisms into groups on the basis of associations by continguity, similarity, or both
2 Ways of Biological Classification:
1.)Defining and describing organisms
2.)Arranging organisms into a logical classification scheme
Systematics:
scientific study of the kinds of organisms, their diversity, and their evolutionary relationships
Cladistics / Phylogenetic Systemics:
a system of arranging taxa by analysis of primitive and derived characteristics so their arrangement will reflect phylogenetic relationships
