Taxonomy Flashcards
what is a species?
a group of organisms that are able to breed to produce fertile living offspring.
what is the purpose of classification?
it allows scientists to identify new speicies, study evolutionary relashionships. understand shared traits and adaption, share research globally to identify links with other organisms on diffrent continents
outline the hierarchical taxonomic system?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
how is the binomal name writern?
upercase first letter of genus
lowercase species
italic if typed
underlined if writtern
what are the five classed in the five kingdom system?
Plantae (plants)
Animalia (animals)
Prokaryotae (prokaryotes)
Protoctista (unicellular eukaryotes)
Fungi (such as yeasts)
what does the three domain system have?
bactaria, archaea, Eukarya
what does domain bactaria have?
Contains the kingdom Eubacteria only, found in all environments.
Prokaryotic unicellular organisms.
Distinct cell membrane lipids.
Have peptidogylcan (murein) in their cell walls.
Unique RNA polymerase enzyme
what does domain Archaea have?
Contains the kingdom Archaebacteria only, typically found in extreme environments.
Prokaryotic unicellular organisms.
Have histones so gene and protein synthesis is more similar to Eukarya than Bacteria.
No peptidogylcan in their cell walls.
Different cell membranes that contain fatty acids bound to glycerol by ether linkages.
Have a more complex form of RNA polymerase than Bacteria.
what does domain Eukarya have?
Contains four kingdoms from the five kingdom system: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protoctista.
All have nuclei and membrane-bound organelles.
