What does the term ‘development’ mean?
- improvement of people’s quality of life and wellbeing
- improving health, quality of life, education, environment, economy
Why is development a contested term?
There are 2 points of view
1. Development is about economy
2. It is about all aspects of human wellbeing
What is a choropleth map?
A map with shading to provide quantitative data on different areas or regions (eg population density)
What is Human Wellbeing?
The quality of life of a population
Agricultural Yields
The agricultural output per hectare of land eg crop yields, milk yields
What is a thematic Map?
A map portraying specific types of info (eg rainfall)
Political
A map that shows the boundaries within countries
Spatial Variation
The variation/difference over an area of the earth’s surface in water, population, GDP, etc
What are Qualitative Methods
Methods such as interviews, discussions, and observations to gather data
What are Quantitative methods?
Statistical methods used to analyse data
What is culture?
The customs, habits, beliefs, way of life etc of different groups and communities

What are geographical Challenges?

- About the environment, sustainability, equality
What is poverty?
- lack of money
- inadequate shelter
- Being starved
- being sick
- having limited education
- fearing for the future
- walking long distances to collect water
- not having access to essential services
