Common Law?
If you have a genuine and honest held belief that you or another are in imminent danger any person may use such force as is reasonable and necessary, in the circumstances, for the purpose of:
Self Defense
Defense of another
Defense of property
Prevention of crime
Lawful arrest
Section 3(1) Criminal Law Act 1967
A person may use such force as is reasonable in the circumstances in the prevention of crime, or in effecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders or of persons unlawfully at large.
Section 117 Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
Where any provision of this Act—
(a)confers a power on a constable; and
(b)does not provide that the power may only be exercised with the consent of some person, other than a police officer,the officer may use reasonable force, if necessary, in the exercise of the power.

A - Approach within view of the person. Avoid approaching from behind.
R - Reduce distractions: Radio turned down, one officer talking.
E - Explain what you are doing in simple language and listen to the person.
S - Slow down your actions and give the person more space. Seek help of a relative or carer.

B - Be prepared to back off.
