What is Target Audience
Your target audience is the person or group of people that the final product will be aimed towards
What categories can your target audience fall into
Gender Age Ethnicity Location Income Accessibility
Gender can be either male or female. Certain products can appeal to both genders where as others are much more specific.
Questions to ask:
- Is this product for men?
- Is this product for women?
- What colours are for each gender?
- Are you being sexist?
Age could be specific to a certain group such as teenagers. However, it could cover a range such as 11 to 16 or OAPs
Questions to ask:
- Is this for only one age range?
- What will appeal to that age range?
- Are all adults the same? [20-30] [30-50] [60+]
- Is there a way to produce something that encompasses everyone?
Ethnicity is the group that people may belong to because of their background ancestry, religion or the culture they belong to
Questions to ask:
- Who might access/use this product?
- Can we target a particular ethnic group?
Income is how much money somebody has from their wages which they may be able to spend on things.
Questions to ask:
- Does the target audience have a high income?
- Does the target audience have a low income ?
Location is the place where somebody lives or spends most of their time [i.e. because of work]
Questions to ask:
- Do people from towns want different things to people who live in cities or in the countryside
- What access to facilities do people have?
- Is there a difference between the North and the South
- Is there a difference between cultures in different locations.
Accessibility is about making sure a product is available to as many people as possible.
Questions you might ask:
1. What kind of disabilities might people have:
.Learning
.Physical
2. How would these disabilities affect their ability to access the product?
Key Points
- While a target audience might be defined in one way, these are not the only people who will buy your product
- There are exceptions to this at all times.
