Taping & Strapping Flashcards
How should you tape for an Ankle LCL? (normal level of support)
- Create an anchor at the distal tib/fib.
- Apply 3/4x stirrups medially to laterally.
- Apply ‘Figure 6’
What is the taping used for Turf Toe (Sprain of the MTP of Big Toe)
- Create two anchors; one around the base of the big toe & one around the midfoot.
- Apply tape on the underside of the foot in a relaxed neutral position.
- Apply further support strips forming a shallow ‘X’ over the MTP joint.
- Lock off at the anchors.
How should you tape for a Knee ACL Injury?
Position: Sitting with 30/40* flexion.
- Large EAB; create 2 anchors (above patella by 0.5” & below tibial tuberosity by 1”).
- Create a ‘V’ around the patella (NOT over it).
- Apply more strips and overlap by 50% each time applying tension upwards.
- Lock off at the anchors.
How should you tape for a Thumb Injury? (spica) (minimal level of support)
Position: open as if shaking hands.
- Tape from front of wrist ‘figure 6’ looping the thumb and around wrist again x3.
check IP joint movement & capillary refill in the thumb
How should you tape for a Hip Impingement Injury? (spica)
Position: Standing with leg slightly forward.
creating a figure 8
- Tape laterally from medial aspect around proximal thigh (around the hamstrings).
- Then move up to opposite hip ASIS.
- Around the lower back to other ASIS.
- Then back to inner thigh.
How should you tape for an Elbow hyperextension injury? (most likely Ulnar Collateral Ligament)
Position: arm slightly bent.
- EAB; create 2 anchors (above & below joint).
- Hypafix between the anchors posteriorly.
- Zinc Oxide; straight lines distally overlapping 50% each time.
- Lock it off at both anchors.
What is an ‘Anchor’?
A strip of tape used to form a stable attachment point for the supporting strips.
How should you tape for a Knee MCL Injury?
Position: leg forward, knee slightly bent.
- Large EAB; create 2 anchors (above patella by 0.5” & below tibial tuberosity by 1”).
- Zinc Oxide; make and ‘X’ over the MCL. Overlap between the two making more shallow X’s over the MCL.
- Lock it off with EAB & Zinc.
What is commonly referred to as athletic tape?
Zinc Oxide
How should you tape for a Contusion? (bruise or dead leg etc.)
Use special cohesive tape and wrap nice and tight distally to proximally.
How should you tape for a Finger Injury? (buddy taping)
Tape finger to the buddy next to it.
Place a small peice of foam between the two fingers and then tape above and below 1st IPJ with small tape.
How do you tape for a Syndesmosis Injury?
- Hypafix the distal tib/fib
- 2x buckle straps
How should you tape for a Knee LCL Injury?
Position: leg forward, knee slightly bent.
- Large EAB; create 2 anchors (above patella by 0.5” & below tibial tuberosity by 1”).
- Zinc Oxide; make and ‘X’ over the LCL. Overlap between the two making more shallow X’s over the LCL.
- Lock it off with EAB & Zinc.
How should you tape for a Knee PCL Injury? (hyperextension)
Position: leg forward, knee slightly bent.
- Large EAB; create 2 anchors (above patella by 0.5” & below tibial tuberosity by 1”).
- Hypafix between the anchors posteriorly.
- Zinc Oxide; straight lines distally overlapping 50% each time.
- Lock it off at both anchors.
How should you tape for a Thumb Injury? (spica) (maximal level of support)
Position: open as if shaking hands.
- Tape from front of wrist ‘figure 6’ looping the thumb and around wrist again x3.
- ‘V’ to the thumb and lock-off with EAB or Buckle strap.
