Tang Taizong
The Sui Dynasty built a strong foundation for the great achievements of the next dynasty, the Tang. The Tang dynasty ruled for 300 years (618-907). The Tang emperor’s achievement was Tang Taizong.
Wu Zhao
Taizong’s armies reconquered the northern and western lands that China had lost since the decline of the Han dynasty. The ruler during the campaign in Korea was the empress Wu Zhao.
Movable type
A printer could arrange blocks of individual characters in a frame to make up a page for printing. Printers had carved the words of a whole page into one large block. The development of gunpowder led to the creation of explosive wepons such as a bombs, grenades, and small rockets.
Gentry
Well-born, high social class, especially in the past. Gentry, in its widest connotation, refers to people of good social position connected to landed estates.
How did the Tang Dynasty benefit from the Sui Dynasty?
They benefited from the accomplishments of the Sui dynasty because of building projects and the roads and canals begun by the Sui. Building projects that allowed the Tang to benefit were projects such as fixing the Great Wall of China.
What steps did the Tang Dynasty take to restore China’s bureaucracy?
They took steps by reviving and expanding the civil service exams begun by the Han Dynasty. It helped the people who passed the exams to become part of the government. Describe the urban classes that emerged during the Tang and Song Periods.

During the Tang and Song periods larger upper class families made up of scholar officials and their families began to emerge. At the bottom of all the social classes were urban society were soldiers and servants. `

By introducing a new rice strain increased the food supply, allowing for the growth of cities.

Women had greater freedom during the Tang dynasty, however, the status of women declined from the Song dynasty onward, which has been blamed on the rise of neo-Confucianism, and restrictions on women became more noticable.
