Describe the Transition Process

A
  • Begins approximately 45-60 days prior to your target date
  • Start with a fact finding call ask 5-6 pages of questions about your practice
  • They will set up 10-12 phone calls to begin the education process.
  • Give a preformatted spreadsheet by household
    • Household 1 is the best client.
      • ​List type of accounts such as IRAs, brokerage accounts, cash mgt, etc…
    • You can take Name, Address, Phone Number, Email & Account Type
    • We are limited by privacy laws until affiliation
    • You send the spreadsheet to us approx 30 days prior to join
    • They start building client packets to recreate benefits
      • ​Margin, ACH, Credit Cards, etc…
    • ​​​​Packets are sent to you two weeks prior to Join Date
      • During this time you’ll print labels for the packets.
  • Work with Marketing on Transitional materials
  • Work with Greg Mitro on entity selection, benefits, etc
  • Therefore on your first day, you’re accustomed to the new forms, office is set up, computer is turned on and works, benefits are up so all you need to do is meet with clients.

  • Exams are administered every three years

    • Series 24 or 9-10 Supervisors/Registered Principles (S201)
    • Exams are broken down into 4 modules with questions after each one.
      • Registration departments can get an extension on the time limit to 8 hrs for people that may need it.
      • It’s their responsibility to help advisors pass the exam.

  • It’s not a strength for us because we made a conscious decision not to enter the space.
  • We felt it’s too illiquid and difficult to sell
  • Dividend Capital Diversified Porperty Fund is the lone Non-Traded Reit we offer

    • More transparency
    • It’s got diversified commercial real estate.
    • Comissions are compressed - 3% up front - 50 bps trail.

  • Compliance will give the advisor a seperate view-only login to BondDesk where they can see high yield offerings.
  • Advisor would then call the desk to execute any trades.
  • Because we do not position high yield they need to use other sources for research.
    • They can use Moody’s, S&P or Gimme Credit.

Do you offer exchange funds for

concentrated positions in clients portfolios?

  • Yes, we currently have two offerings from Eaton Vance.
    • Beldore Capital Fund - Large Cap emphasis
    • Clearfork Capital Fund - Multi Cap
  • Advisors get paid between 1-2.5% depending on the size of the account.
    • 0 - $2m comission is 1.5%
    • $2m to 5m comission is 1%
    • > $5m - comission is 0
    • Eaton Vance will also pay a 1% bonus on assets.
      • There is an admin fee of 60 or 70 bps that pays to manage the fund.
  • Exchange funds will often add the concentrated equity to the portfolio the owner becomes a pro rata owner of the fund providing diversification. Because the stock isn’t sold there are no capital gains. The holding is typically 7 years. There is a 1% penalty from Eaton Vance if removed in the first 3 years.

Can qualified account ACAT fees that are being reimbursed to a client for deposited directly back to Qualified Accounts?

A

  • No, although its common practice in the industry, we cannot currently do this.
    • We are partnered with a number of firms through SIFMA that asked for clarification from the IRS on this particular issue.
  • Currently we will issue a check or deposit into a non-qualified accounts.
