Talk Therapy Flashcards
The therapeutic continuum
Catharsis, psychoeducation, supportive therapy, insight orientated therapy, Self actualisation therapy.
Catharsis
Most basic form of intervention.
Therapist listens while client talks
In some instances catharsis alone is sufficient, however if certain emotions such as anger are left unchecked catharsis may intensify these feelings instead of releasing them.
List the components of psychoeducation
- Understanding the condition
- Recognising and avoiding stressors ( recognising and avoiding situations and activities that may exacerbate the condition)
- Identifying early warning signals for relapse
- Lifestyle factors for maintaining stability ( daily routine, diet, exercise, substance use, work patterns and environment)
What is supportive therapy
It involves practical application of various techniques including encouragement, acknowledgement, validation and reading a safe space to address intrusive thoughts.
Main objectives:
1. help client maintain a level of functioning in the face of current life challenges
2. help client regain previous level of functioning after having experienced a trauma, chronic illness or stressor
