Talk about your experience up to date.

A
  • After graduating from university, I joined Tectura architects as an architectural graduate and mainly worked on education project team.

My initial duties at work were setting up the BIM standard for the company because the company was in transition from AutoCAD-based documentation to a BIM system. After completing setting up the BIM standards for Tectura architects, then I started to join education projects.

I spent most of my working hours on Miners Rest primary school project in Ballarat & Clyde primary school project in Clyde. Each project budget was around 20M for the refurbishment of existing school facilities and providing new school building to adopt future students.

I joined the project team from the master planning stage to contract documentation and my task was mainly assisting the project architect throughout the whole stage.

The client of all the school projects was Victoria School Building Authority so-called VSBA. There was a list of requirements that we had to follow, such as submitting the report on each project stage and comply with the Building quality standard handbook which was published by the government body along with Australian standards and NCC.

All my tasks are based on those requirements and also attend the project control group meetings with project architects to record meeting minutes as well as to measure existing conditions. Coordination with consultants was also one of my duties to prevent any clashes between different disciplines and checking the services are aligned with the proposed architectural design.

One of the difficulties while working on the education projects is dealing with a project manager. VSBA had a rule that if the total project cost is over a certain amount of dollars, it was mandatory to have a project manager.

They normally scheduled a meeting too often and expected a progress report from us without checking by themselves. One event that I particularly remember is regarding rocks found on-site. The contractor requested variation for removal and the project manager try to reduce the areas for the rock excavation and asked us to redesign with new slab levels and outdoor walkways without understanding the consequence. Therefore, the project team had to estimate the price for redesign to explain to the project manager how it will cost much more than accepting the variation from the builder to remove rocks.

After all, it ended by accepting the variation but there was wasting a time producing unnecessary drawings and reports to estimate the price for the re-design.

Unfortunately, I left the company before the practical completion. Now I’m working as a BIM technician at a bigger company to learn in-depth how the big firms adopt BIM system and what is required when the BIM model is part of the contractual deliverable.
