Q

What is a Pattern?

A

A Pattern is a set of fundamental movements, mainly defence and attack, set in a logical sequence to deal with one or more imaginary opponents. Patterns are an indication of a student’s progress - a barometer in evaluating an individual’s technique.

Q

Why do patterns?

A

We practise patterns to improve our Tae Kwon-Do techniques, to develop sparring techniques, to improve flexibility of movement, master body-shifting, develop muscles, balance and breath control. They also enable us to acquire techniques which cannot be obtained from other forms of training.

Q

Why are there 24 patterns?

A

There are 24 patterns in Tae Kwon-Do because Major General Choi Hong Hi compared the life of a man with a day in the life of the earth and said

HERE I LEAVE TAE KWON DO FOR MANKIND
AS A TRACE OF A MAN OF THE LATE 20TH CENTURY.
THE TWENTY FOUR PATTERNS REPRESENT 24 HOURS
ONE DAY OR ALL OF MY LIFE

Q

What is One Step Sparring?

A

One step sparring is the most realistic form of sparring there is, simply because the defender cannot foresee the attack coming. Therefore, the defender must have very fast reflexes, in order to defend and defeat the opponent. This form of sparring is completely different to free sparring, i.e. take down techniques, arm locks, joint breaking techniques etc. are practised. Both students normally begin in parallel stance, but this may be varied at the instructors’ discretion.

Q

What is Three Step Sparring?

A

Three Step Sparring introduces the beginner to set sparring and aims to teach students the following:
• proper distance
• correct facing
• forearm conditioning
• correct blocks
• correct stance and counter attacks
• timing
The attacker steps forward three times in a walking stance (gunnun sogi) whilst performing a middle section obverse front punch (kaunde baro ap jirugi). The first attack is always in a right walking stance.
The defender starts in a parallel ready stance and then steps back three times performing a set sequence of blocks followed by a set counter attack.
