Lines

A

Standard guitar tab consists of six horizontal lines, with each line representing the six strings on the guitar.

Numbers

A

The numbers you see in a guitar tab refers to the fret of that particular string that needs to be played. 0 means an open string, 1 means first fret, 2 means second fret etc.

Rhythm

A

The tab should be divided into measures to help you keep correct rhythm. The time signature shows you how many beats are in each measure. The top number shows you how many beat are in each measure. The bottom number shows you the note value for one beat.

Transcription

A

Transcription is when you listen to a recorded piece of music and notate it down by ear, in the form of sheet music, tablature such as guitar tabs, or whatever format you choose. Transcription is a great way to work on your musical ear and get to know your instrument better.
