Tableau 1 Flashcards
Tableau architectural compnents
Tableau desktop ‘ authoring and publishing tool ‘ also used to connect to various data sources
Tableau server users to save collaborate share their work
Tableau Online similar to Tableau server cloud based version of scene
Tableau mobile uses to access Tableau dash board and reports from mobile devices
Data connectors: users to connect to various data sources like data base spreadsheets
Interfaces of tableau
Workspace = where you create and design visualisations. These are tools to interact with data
Data pane: located on left side of the interface displays data source you have connected to
Canvas: main areas where you build your visualisation. Drag and drop from Data pane
Toolbar;contains tools to interact with your visualisation
Worksheet individual visualisation of charts. Dashboards allow you to combine multiple visualisation into a single canvas.
Top charts in tableau
Depends on your specific requirements
I. Bar chart: effective for comparing categorical data- useful for visualizing ranking trends and comparison
2 line chart-ideal for visualising trends and patterns over time ag: stock trends
3. Scatter plot: to visualise relationship between 2 continuous variables. Identity correlation, clusters
4 pie chart: suitable for displaying proportion of diffecategories within single dataset ag: market share
5. Histogram: display the distribution of continuous variable by dividing it into bins and counting frequency within each bin
Tableau
Powerful data visualisation and business intelligence software that allows users to connect, share and visualise data in a way that helps understanding and decision making
Key features of Tableau
Data connectivity,
Data visualisation
Drag and drop interface
Real time analysis
Data preparation
Collaboration and sharing
Various file types
- Tableau Data source (TDS) = XML based file containing connection information to data source like database Excel
2, packaged TDS (itdsx) = similar to TDS but contains the data itself so it can be sent to people without access to original data - Tableau extract c-hyper, -IDE) = local copy of data from data source stared in tableau format 4’ Tableau data connection (tdc) is an XML based file that contains custom connection settings for a data source,
- Tableau book mark (tbm) contains a single worksheet or dashboard saved from Tableau workbook.
Parameters
Dynamic controls that allow users to interactively change values,
Key points about parameters in Tableau
- Creation= Data pane» parameters set type and value
. 2 use cases = various purposes: a) filtering data b. Changing dimension c setting reference d) controlling threshold
3 default values - Integrated with calculations
- Parameter control types= drop down list, sliders
- Limitations = cannot be directly used in SQL and large datasets
Grouping
Combine multiple values within a field into a single group
Useful for simplifying analysis, Create categories, aggregating data
How grouping works in tableau
- Create group: data pane » create → group
Include specific values dick ok - Edit group: data panes → eat group
Add/remove value and dick ok - Grouping by DataRange: Data Janes → create → bins
4’ using grouped fields: will be shown as new dimension in Data pane* they can be dragged G dropped - Performance consideration: size and complexity is affected on performance
How you can work with sets ‘in tableau
1, creating sets: create → set and define conditions
2- edit sets- Data panes → edit and modify condition
3. Dynamic sets VS fixed set
4 visualise set
5. Set in calculation
6. Combine sets = union, intersection
