Tala
Beating of time. tala is the rhythmic pattern of Indian music. It is generally recognised as the time side of music as distinct from the pitch side.
Matra
Is the most basic measuring unit of time. It is a beat. Several matras grouped together make a rythmic pattern or a tala
Laya
Tempo. Vilambit, Madhya and Dhrut
Sam
First bar of the Vibhag. Musical accent. Sam is vital turning point of unity in tala which repeats regularly with characteristic force of the accent.
Tali
Hand clapping is called tali. When tali is used in Theka, it is said thali or bhari
Khali
Means a gap or when there is no clap in the theka or Tala
Theka
Means support and refers to accompaniment pattern for Indian music and is the most basic cyclic form. This is the accompanying rhythm for vocals, instruments and dance. In North Indian music theka and tala are inextricably linked.
Bol
The different tonal qualities achieved by sticking with the fingers or the palm of the hand and at different places on the playing skin of the tabla

Playing one complete cycle of a tala is called avartan. Twice is called two avartan

Peshkar
A type of theme and variation used to introduce a tabla solo. Uses interesting counter rhythms or layakari and has fully developed theme and variation to display various styles of Bol of theka in different rhythms. It shows the bold of theka in single, couple, triple and quadruple rhythms.
Kaida
Kaida is important of the performance and pedagogy of tabla solo. The word means rule. Implies and organised system of rules or formula used to generate theme and variation. It consists of Bari and Khali.
Rela
To play boss of tabla in different styles in fast speed. often in quadruple and double quadruple speed. Named and the train or railway
Palta
To play boss of real and kaida combined and separately in different styles to produce new variety.
