T8:Analysis Flashcards
What is a PURE substance in chemistry?
Something only containing 1 COMPOUND or ELEMENT.
How can you test for the purity in a sample?
Measure it’s M/B point and compare with results of pure thingy.
The closer the value, the purer it is.
How will impurities affect your sample?
Will lower MP and M-range.
Will ^ BP and B-range.
What are FORMULATIONS?
Useful mix with a precise purpose .
Each component is in a precise quantity and contributes to the properties of the formulation so that its required function.
Whats are paints formulations made of?
PIGMENT
SOLVENT-dissolve other and alter viscocity.
BINDER-resin.Makes a film to hold in place.
ADDITIVES-change physical and chem.properties.
Why are formulations important in the pharmaceutical industry?
V.important
e.g By altering the formulation of a pill, can deliver to correct part of body in correct conc. SO THAT IT IS CONSUMABLE AND HAS A ONG ENOUGH SHELF LIFE.
Where can formulations be found in everyday life?
Cleaning products ,fuels ,cosmetics, fertilisers, metal alloys and food and drink.
What might you find on packaging? Give an example of of what it may say:
May find info on packaging which let you choose one with right compos.4u and tells you it its formul.
e.g Ratio/percentage of each component .
What is chromatography?
How is it useful?
An analytical method used to separate substances in a mix.
Can use to identify the substance .
Different types.
What 2 phases does chromatography have?
MOBILE- molecules can move, liquid/gas.
STATIONARY- molecules can’t move, solid/really thick liquid.
What happens during chromatography?
- Substances in sample constantly MOVE between the mobile and stationary phases EQUILIBRIUM
