How does the mouth aid digestion?
It has saliva (enzymes) which is chemical digestion and also uses mecanical digestion (teeth)
What does saliva contain? [2 marks]
Enzymes and Buffers
Buffers counteract acidity in your mouth which prevents tooth decay
What is a bolus?
It is a ball of food and saliva which is formed as a result of chewing.
What is peristalsis?
Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
Where does peristalsis occur [3 marks]
- Oesophagus
- Small intestine
- Large intestine
What type of muscle does peristalsis use?
Smooth muscle
What chemicals are found in the stomach? [2 marks]
- Gastric juices
- Hydrochloric acid
After a few hours, what is the resulting substace from the stomach called?
Chyme
What are those barriers near the stomach called? Where are they found?
- Sphincters
They are found seperating the oesophagus and stomach and then the stomach from the small intestine
