T1 Flashcards
What is Active transport?
The movement of molecules from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration across a cell membrane which requires energy.
How root hair cells adapted to absorb water and mineral ions from the soil?
Large surface area
Lots of mitochondria for respiration for energy
Why can’t plants absorb ions by diffusion?
The concentration of ions is higher in the cell than in the soil.
What is Osmosis?
The net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration.
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A membrane where only some molecules can pass through
What are the factors that affect the rate of diffusion?
Temperature
Short diffusion pathway
Concentration gradient
Surface area
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Where does diffusion happen
Gases and liquids
How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy the particles have so they move faster and diffuse more quickly.
The higher the rate of diffusion
