T-34 Questions - Aircraft Terminology Flashcards
Define airplane.
A heavier-than-air fixed-wing aircraft that is driven by engine-driven-propellor or a gas turbine jet and is supported by the dynamic reaction of airflow over its wings.
What type of construction is used in the fuselage of the T-34C? Why?
the T-34C uses a semi monocoque fuselage consisting of stringers, transverse frame members, and the skin.
What variety of wing has no external bracing?
Full cantilever
What control surfaces are attached to the wing?
ailerons
What control surfaces are attached to the empennage?
rudder and elevator
What control surface is used for longitudinal control?
elevator
What is the primary source of directional control?
rudder
Define airplane center of gravity.
The CG is the point at which all weight is considered to be concentrated.
List the three airplane axes and the motions that occur about each.
longitudinal/roll, lateral/pitch, directional/yaw
Define wingspan.
The length of the wing measured tip to tip.
What is the difference between chordline, chord, tip chord, root chord and average chord?
The chord line is an imaginary straight line drawn through the leading and trailing edges of the airfoil. Average chord is the geometric average of every chord from the root to the tip. Tip chord is the length fo the chord at the tip. Root chord “”
Define wing area, and state the formula for calculating it.
The apparent surface area of the wing from tip to tip including the area with in the fuselage and nacelles. S=bc
Define taper, taper ratio, and sweep angle.
Taper is the reduction in the chord from the wing root to the tip. taper ratio is the ration of the tip chord to the root chord. Sweep angle is the angle between a line drawn 25% aft of the leading edge and a line parallel to the lateral axis.
What is aspect ratio? What type of aspect ratio would you expect to find on a B-52 bomber? A high performance fighter?
The ratio of the wingspan to the average chord. A B-52 bomber would have a high aspect ratio. A high performance fighter would have a low aspect ratio.
Define angle of incidence. Can the angle of incidence ordinarily be changed?
The angle formed between the chordline of an airfoil and the longitudinal axis of the airplane. It is fixed in most airplanes.
