SZ - the interactionist approach Flashcards
What does the interactionist approach recognise abt. SZ?
There are biological, psychological and societal factors in the development of sz.
What are some of the biological factors that may cause sz according to the IA?
Genetic factors
Neurochemistry
Neurological abnormality
What are some of the psychological factors that may cause sz according to the IA?
Poor interaction w/ family
How the brain processes info
Stress from life events
What are some of the societal factors that may cause sz according to the IA?
Poor living conditions
Low status in society
What does the diathesis-stress model mean according to the IA?
- Ind.s may inherit genetic vulnerability for developing the disorder
- Also incorporates psychological trauma that can alter brain dev. (abuse, neglect)
- Vulnerability is triggered by stressful life events and vary enormously case to case
- Could be triggered by early childhood trauma etc.
- Diathesis + stress = sz
What does the IA say about treating sz?
Turkington (2006) treating ps w/ combination of CBT and anti-psychotics.
Cannot claim condition is completely biological meaning the IA model is essential.
Drug treatment alone is becoming less common and psychological treatment alone is very rare.
IA AO3: What supporting evidence is there for the IA from Tienari?
Tienari (2004) Finnish adoption study looked at child rearing styles in 2 groups
- Children adopted from mothers w/ sz
- Control of adoptees w/ no risk
Child rearing styles that were highly critical and there was much conflict was implicated in dev. of sz but only in children w/ vulnerability.
IA AO3: What supporting evidence is there for IA from Tarrier?
Tarrier et al. (2004) compared control group (medication only) w/ 2 experimental groups (1. medication and CBT 2. medication and supportive counselling).
Experimental groups showed greater reduction in symptoms. Shows treatment outcomes better w/ IA.
No diff. in relapse rates.
IA AO3: What is a strength of this approach in terms of the reductionist and holistic approach?
It is the only approach that attempts to take a more holistic view of disorder. Enables us to understand the complexity and ensure ps are receiving the best treatment for disorder.
IA AO3: What is the issue w/ taking the holistic approach?
We don’t understand the relative importance of diathesis or stress so we cannot fully understand this appr. Contribution of each to disorder is uncertain.
Source of diathesis and stress is varied so it is difficult to know where to direct research time and funding.
