systems in action Flashcards
what’s the definition of a system?
a group of parts that work together to preform a task.
what is a physical system?
a system made of parts.
what is a social system?
a system made of people or living organisms.
what’s the definition of a force?
a push or pull that acts on an object
what is a contact force?
a contact force must touch the object it is acting on.
what is an action-at-a-distance force?
a force that act on an object without touching it.
what’s the definition of friction?
a force that resists the motion, usually two surfaces rubbing against eachother.
what’s the definition of mass?
the amount of matter in an object.
what’s the definition of weight?
How heavy something is due to gravity.
what’s the definition of work?
work is done when a force causes an object to move a distance.
what’s the definition of energy?
the ability to do work.
what is Kinetic Energy?
The energy of an object in motion.
what is potential energy?
stored energy
what’s the definition of a machine?
Any mechanical system that reduces the force required to accomplish work.
what is input/effort force?
the force applied to the machine.
what is the output/load force?
the force that applies to the object.
What is the maximum amount of pulleys used to preform a task?
You can use 4 pulleys to maximize the MA.
Name all 6 different simple machines.
LIPSWWa
Lever, Inclined Plane, Pulleys, Screw, Wedge, Wheel and Axle.
Name a lever example that is greater than 1.
Nutcracker, Bottle opener, Scissors, ect.
(Any class 1 or 2 lever.)
Name a lever example that is equal to 1.
Single fixed pulley or Seesaw.
Name a lever example that is less than 1.
Tennis racket, Hockey stick, Baseball bat, ect.
(Any class 3 lever.)
List an example of a physical system. (on test)
-Clock
-Car
-Phone
-Blinds
List an example of a social system. (on test)
- Healthcare system
- Education system
- Communities
List an example of an input and output force. (on test)
Input: Battery
Output: To cool you down.
(^for fan^)
Input: Peddles
Output: To ride down a trail.
(^for bike^)
List an example of a contact force. (on test)
- Kicking a ball
- Opening a door
- Playing Tag of War
List an example of an action-at-a-distance force. (on test)
- Gravity
- Magnetic
- Static Electricity
List an example of a kinetic energy.
- Walking
- Ball rolling down a hill
- Flying Airplane
List an example of potential energy
- stretched rubber band
- dynamite
- water behind a dam
what are the 3 things machines can do?
Increase the force or distance, and change the direction.
What units is mass measured with?
kg, g, or mg
what units are weight measured with?
Newtons (N)
What are the 3 advantages of class 3 levers?
They give you speed, distance and accuracy. (but they are harder to use)
What is a natural social system? (on test)
- Beehive
- Wolfpack
- Ant colony
What is the input also known as? (on test)
The input is also known as the effort.
What is the output also known as? (on test)
The output is also known as the load.
What is the pivot point also known as? (on test)
The pivot point is also known as the fulcrum.
Why cant a machine be 100% efficient?
Because friction steals some of the input on the machine.
