performes all of the arithmetic and logical operations of the cpu
what does the cpu do
controls what happens in the computer

it holds the results of calculations and operations performed by the alu
what does the mar do
holds the address of the location in memory where data is to be retrieved or stored
what does the mdr do
holds data that has been retrieved from memory or that’s about to be stored
what does the program counter (pc) do
holds memory location address of next instruction for cpu
what is cache memory
small amount of very fast memory inside the cpu
