Systems Approach Flashcards
What is a feedback?
Is a return or knock on effect that usually leads to a change in the effectiveness of one or more processes in a cycle
What does a geographical system have?
Inputs, stores, transfers and outputs, can be closed or open
What does a system constantly strive for?
To be in dynamic equilibrium
Why is the system considered open?
Because if recycled inputs from the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and cryosphere (materials and energy both can leave and enter, whilst closed is only energy)
Why is the system considered closed?
Due to specific sediment cells
Explain positive feedback in a costal system?
As waves erode the cliff, material is released, this material abrades the cliff which results in even more cliff erosion, positive feedback enhances and leads to a continuation of the outcome
Explain negative feedback in a coastal system?
As the shore erodes, material makes the wave cut platform wider, this can absorb wave energy and reduce the impact of erosion at the base of the cliff, negative feedback reduces the outcome leading to stability and the equilibrium being restored
How does coastal systems link to other natural systems?
During the cold glacial periods global sea levels are much lower which affects the location of coastal landforms and processes. During the last ice age, low sea levels meant the UK and France where connected by a land bridge. Current changes in the global carbon cycle affect physical processes at the coast but also human one’s as coastal regions are eroding faster and at a greater risk of coastal flooding
