Systems Flashcards
Skeletal system
(joint & bones) -protects & supports body organs, - provides a framework for muscle movement -blood cells are formed within bones Bones store minerals
Integumentary system
(Hair, skin, nails)
-external body covering
-protects deeper tissue from injury. >Synthesizes vitamin D
>houses cutaneous (Pain, pressure etc.) receptors & sweat & oil glands
Muscular system
(Skeletal muscles)
-manipulation of environment
> locomotion & facial expression
- maintain posture & heat
Nervous system
(Brain, spinal cord, nerves)
- fast~acting control system
- responds to internal and external changes by activating muscles and glands
Endocrine system
( Pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, testis & ovarys)
- glands secrete hormones that regulate : * Reproduction * Growth * nutrients use by body cells
Cardiovascular system
( heart & blood vessels)
- Blood vessels transport blood, carried oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, nutrients, wastes.
- heart pumps blood
Lymphatic system/immunity
(Red bone marrow, thymus, lymphatic vessels, thoracic duct, spleen, lymph nodes)
- return leaking fluids back to the blood
- dispose of debris in the lymphatic stream.
- houses white blood cells in the immunity. (lymphocytes)
- the immune response to attack foreign substances within the body
Respiratory system
( Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchus, lungs)
- keeps blood constantly supplied with oxygen
- removes carbon dioxide
- the gaseous exchanges occur through the walls of the air sacs of the lungs
Digestive system
(Oral cavity, esophagus, liver, stomach, small intestine, large intestine. Rectum, anus)
- breaks down food into absorbable units that enter the blood for distribution to cells
- indigestible foodstuffs are eliminated as feces.
Urinary system
(Kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, urethra)
- eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body
- regulates water, electrolyte & acid-base balance of the blood
Male & female reproductive system
MALE : (prostrate gland, penis, testis, scrotum, ductus deferen)
FEMALE: (mammary glands, ovary, uterus, uterine tube, vagina)
- Production of offspring
- testes = sperm & male hormones ( male ducts aid sperm)
- ovaries = eggs and female hormones ( others are sites for fertilization & development of fetus
