Premises of Models
1) Believed that mental phenomena reflects social phenomena. A mental problem is really a problem of social interaction.
2) Model built on circular epistemology. Family members seen as caught in recursive patterns. Therefore, therapist, without moral stance must remain neutral, so family can explore alternatives for change.
3) Linear thinking is incomplete, doesn’t take into account whole system.
How symptoms develop
Symptoms are functional.
-Symptoms are family members attempt to maintain homeostatic balance.
Goals of Therapy
Change family rules to change behavior. (2nd order change)
