a harmful organism that produces pathology
What is a commensal?
an organism that is part of the normal flora
What is an opportunistic pathogen?
an organism that causes infection when opportunity/when change in natural immunity occurs

Streptococcus and Staphylococcus are what type of bacteria?

Why is neisseria gonorrhoea important?
possibly antibiotic resistant and have no vaccine for it
What is a coliform?
term used to species of gram -ve bacilli that look like E.coli when cultured on blood agar and in gram film
What antibiotic is used to treat coliforms?
Gentamicin
What is a fever defined as?
temp >38 degrees Celsius
Describe mechanism of fever
antigen interact with macrophages, macrophages release cytotoxins which go to hypothalamus to increase body’s thermal set point
What is sepsis?
the host response to severe infection
What occurs in sepsis?
small blood vessels become leaky and lose fluid. Lower blood levels requires heart to work harder. Lower oxygen levels means blood supply to some organs is shutdown
Streptococcus causes what 2 main infections?
pneumonia and GAS
Alpha haemolysis is what type of haemolysis?
