System Engineering Flashcards
What is system engineering?
The term used to describe the set up and optimization of PA Systems
What is Bi - amping?
Separating the top to run the Mids off one amplifier and the Highs off another.
Explain how the JBL VRX works in passive mode.
You run the signal into +/- Pin 1 on the speaker from the amplifier.
Set the mode to passive via a switch on the back.
The signal is split using an internal crossover to the Mid Driver and the Horns.
Explain how the JBL VRX works in Bi - Amp mode.
You use pin 1 and 2 to send 2 signals into the speaker cabinet.
Set the speaker to Bi-Amp mode via a switch on the back.
This bypasses the internal crossover and we will crossover the signal before we send it to Mid Driver and Horns as two SEPARATE signals from the amplifier.
What is a speaker management system?
An “all-in-one” device that contains multiple functions of a number of popular devices.
What functions do speaker management systems include?
- Parametric EQ
- Graphic EQ
- Limiters
- Delay
- Crossover
- Distribution
What are delay stacks
Speakers added further away from the main PA
What does the inverse square law say?
sound diminishes by half of its volume
every time it doubles in distance from the source
True or False.
We usually have subs in delay stacks.
False.
What is the formula for working out the delay of a delay stack.
Ds = X/ C * 1000
What is a digital amplifier?
An amplifier reproduces audio input signals and sends them to speakers at a desired volume and power level.
What advantages do Class D amplifiers have over Analog amplifiers?
- Produces less heat
- Saves Circuit board space and cost
What is a line array?
A Line Array is PA system that features a number of identical loudspeakers arranged in a vertical line
Where do you adjust the angle of a the line array?
At the rear
How do we calculate the angle of a line array?
Using software
What parameters need to be entered into the software when working out the angle of a line array?
i. Height of the PA from the ground
ii. Distance between the PA and the first row of the audience
iii. Distance from the PA and the back of the venue
iv. The rake of the venue - Does the setting area angle upwards or downwards
v. The number of speaker boxes in the array.
What does Smaart Stand for?
Systems Measurement Acoustic Analysis Real-time Tool.
What is smaart?
It is an analyzer. This tool helps examine a sound system in detail and diagnose and solve problems
What do we use smaart for?
We use Smaart to identify tones/frequencies of interest
and help us with tasks like feedback suppression and channel equalization.
It assists us in the process of setting up and aligning our speaker systems in our performance environment
