System Earth Ch 14 Flashcards
glacial striations
directions of past glacial movement. These are rocks trapped under moving glaciers
how does oxygen isotope record holding work?
colder temperature, more 18O in CaCO3 because the minerals incorporate it more easily.
oxygen ratio notation
delta where 18O is the ratio of 18O to16O so a positive delta 18O means colder temperatures. 16O is lighter so more in the atmosphere
what are the stats during glacials?
9-10 degrees and 200ppm CO2
when did the whole periodicity mess up?
700,000 years ago
eccentricity
period: 100,000 years
how eliptical the orbit is
obliquity
period: 41,000 years
tilt of the earth - between 22 &24. 5 degrees - responsible for seasonal changes
precession
period: 26,000 years
spinning top idea
has changed through the years
current eccentricity value
0.017 (varies between 0 and 0.06)
how do you best describe the glacial and interglacial variation?
as two steady states but when you push them too far, you end up in the other steady state.
ice albedo feedback
positive loop
evidence from ice cores
data up to 800,000 years ago. Contains air bubbles
biological pump
a very active biological pump removes the CO2 from the atmosphere. The CO2 is then stored elsewhere. With 100% efficiency of the pump, you would have 165 ppm CO2
