System Busses Flashcards
What is the External Data Bus (ETD
A row of wires that interconnect the parts of our computer. Almost like the veins in our body.
How does the ETD send binary 1’s and 0’s along the wires ?
Voltage = Binary 1
No Voltage = Binary 0
How many lines of data can the ETD send at a time ?
Can only send one line of data at a time
What is needed to bridge the CPU to the RAM
A Memory Controller Chip
MCC
What does the Address Bus do ?
Connects the CPU to the MCC and sends over the location of the data but not the data itself.
MCC takes the address and looks for the data. Then data is send over the EDB
Control bus flow of data
Data can flow back and forth from the CPU
Data can flow back and forth from memory.
Address bus flow of data
Can only receive data from the CPU
Can only send data to memory
Data bus flow of data
Data can flow back and forth from the CPU
Data can flow back and forth to memory
Names of the two controllers
North and South Bridge
What does the northbridge control ?
CPU RAM PCIe communication
What does the southbridge manage ?
Manages communication between USB, IDE, ISA, Ethernet, PCI, BIOS etc
What bus connects the CPU to RAM
What is it called in older systems ?
Front Side Bus
In older systems the system bus
What are system busses essentially ?
Pathways for Data to flow.
I/O busses
Connects the motherboard to the PCs peripheral devices.
Data can flow back and forth from the CPU
Data can flow back and forth from memory.
Data Bus and Control Bus
