Syringe Volume Issues Flashcards
Define Syringe Dead Space
Space in a syringe where fluid is retained after the syringe plunger has been depressed
Syringe + Needle Volume
Dead space in the syringe hub varies with manufacturers
Increased gauge =
decreased needle volume
Increased needle length =
increased needle volume
Dead Space Considerations
Mixing 2 drugs in 1 syringe & diluting a drug in a syring= significant with less than 1 mL
When mixing 2 drugs in 1 syringe:
You will get too much of the first drug and not enough of the second drug
Hub holds:
0.4 mL
Needle holds:
0.3 mL
How to handle dead space in mixing 2 drugs?
Use three syringes - one for each drug and one to mix in
You are given a priming volume of 0.5 with 0.1 mL of drug A and 0.1 mL of drug B.
What are the total volumes of drug A, B and total overall?
- 1/2 = 0.05
- 1+0.05 = 0.15 Drug A and Drug B
- 15+0.15= 0.3 mL total
You are given a priming volume of 0.1 mL
Calculate the priming volume for 0.3 mL of glycopyrrolate and 0.48 mL of promethazine
- 1* (0.3/(0.3+0.48)) = 0.04 mL glycopyrrolate
0. 1*(0.48/(0.3+0.48) = 0.06 mL of promethazine
